Becoming a safety and health professional requires multidisciplinary training. The OSH profession calls for a broad-based educational background combined with specialized knowledge of aspects of the physical sciences (medicine, physics, chemistry and engineering) and social sciences (behaviour, motivation and communication), and the principles and concepts of management. Many professionals need to update their competences in these fields. To meet this need, the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITCILO) is offering a distance-learning course on OSH, delivered via an internet-based platform. The proposed programme will incorporate the ILO's international experience of OSH and, where methodology is concerned, the ITCILO's international training experience.
The course is aimed at trainers and advisers belonging to governmental and employers' and workers' organizations involved in the promotion of OSH within enterprises. The programme may also be of interest to members of other professional and industrial bodies, training institutions involved in OSH and, above all, managers, supervisors and technical staff responsible for OSH within enterprises.

Strategies to ensure OSH for young workers
Date: 18 - 22 March 2019 |
Deadline for applications: 15 February 2019 |
Language: English |
Location: ITCILO, Turin, Italy |
Young workers are highly vulnerable in the workplace. According to recent EU data, they suffer as much as a 40 per cent higher rate of non-fatal occupational injuries than older workers. In the United States, the risk of young workers between the ages of 15 and 24 suffering a non-fatal occupational injury is approximately twice as high as for workers aged 25 or older. Many factors contribute to this: their physical and psychological stage of development; a lack of job skills, work experiences and training; inadequate supervision in the workplace; limited knowledge of occupational safety and health (OSH) hazards and preventive practices; a lack of understanding of their rights at work; and limited bargaining power. These factors often lead young workers to accept dangerous tasks in unsafe working conditions. This course familiarizes participants with the ILO's international guidelines, principles and tools, and the experience of consolidated and successful national OSH systems and programmes in addressing youth vulnerabilities and protecting young workers
